Q: can i use a 3.7v battery instead of the 1.5x2 that would ultimately be 3v?

User420 You can add a (Shottky) diode in series with a battery to reduce its voltage a bit. I watched once a video on youtube, how to make whole this construction with Li-ion battery charge circuit for a different multimeter model. But I am pretty sure, hat it will be suitable for this one to. Video was in Russian.

BG355725939 I measured the following internal resistances for 4 devices: 10 V - 9500 Ohm * 5 V - 5000 Ohm * 100 mA - 4 Ohm * 50 mA - 8 Ohm.
