To communicate with this module via USB you will need a terminal emulator (I used "CoolTerm") and a CH340 driver. To install the driver, I used the instructions at http://0xcf.com/2015/03/13/chinese-arduinos-with-ch340-ch341-serial-usb-chip-on-os-x-yosemite/.
This doit.am version wakes up running a wireless access point with SSID DoitWiFi. If you connect to this access point and then point your web browser to http://192.168.1.1. This will show you a web page that lets you toggle the voltage on a couple of the hardware pins. If you set D0 to 0, a blue light on the board goes on. To connect to the access point you need a password. It's specified on the doit.am site as 12345678, but that did not work for me. You can, however, easily change the password via the USB interface, with code like this:
