The Japanese company Hakko sets the quality standard for soldering equipment just like Fluke does for multimeters, and this is the real deal, not a cheap Chinese copy. What a joy this is to work with. The FX951 is a compact unit so doesnt take up a lot of space on a workbench, heats up very fast (a few seconds), and gives you great control over the tip temperature (very important when working with sensitive components like small smd's and ic's). The display is clear and shows both the easily adjustable preset temperature and tip temperature. If you buy this iron make sure to also order the excellent selection of genuine Hakko tips (SKU145502), and also get the handy tip cleaner which is a copy of an original Hakko design (SKU037903), it fits into the stand and cleans the tip much better than a wet sponge. I own a few other soldering stations, among them two Wellers, but this Hakko unit is so much better that I cannot imagine I well ever want to use the others again. Control over tip temperature is just so much better with this unit. If you choose a nice thin solder (0.5 mm or smaller gives you good results for both through-hole and smt), combine it with the right tip, and set the temperature correctly than you almost cannot go wrong. The tips are interchanged easily and there is a huge selection of tips available (85 types for this exact iron). The handpiece is light and comfortable in the hand. The wire is flexible and doesnt restrict. The build quality is solid. The Hakko comes with English instructions and even a schematic so you can fix it yourself if that should ever be necessary (rather doubtfull because of the high quality). If you are looking for a professional grade soldering iron for all your electronics projects than look no further, this unit will serve you well for years to come.

FX-951 is a good copy of HAKKO FX-951 with the only difference that there is no sleep mode and the iron holder is different. Although it is easy to operate someone might need the instruction manual that is missing from the box but it available online here: and in Russian here: If you are changing too often the tip you may get S-E or H-E error. This is caused by tip bracket contacts inside the handle. This could be easily fixed or you can buy a spare handle. The product is good at all. Delivered very fast. And the price is about the price of the original holder only.

This iron is working perfectly so far. At first startup the flashing H-E message, accompanied with a loud beep, is a bit disconcerning. However this only means that the iron has reached it's default low-temperature alarm setting during it's warmup and continues to warm up. The iron heats up quickly and seems to have a good thermal capacity. Compared to the 'real deal' your missing out on the automatic lowering of the iron-temperature when it is placed in it's holder, due to the lack of a switch on the supplied holder and the lack of an input on the base-station. So the stand and base station have no way of communicating with each other. Other than that, it can't really be faulted. It works as expected, is made of decent materials ( the stand is not on par with the original one, but given the pricepoint of this welding station it is more then acceptable), heats up quickly and when calibrated with a soldertip thermometer, it is pretty damn accurate. If your in need of a soldering station for home/hobby use, I would highly reccomend this unit.

Even though the Hakko FX 951 is not authentic it still works very well. The quality is also very reasonable.

The iron heats up very quickly, and to my experience in soldering, to the expected temperature. It can deliver enough heat to support soldering of components wired to wide copper planes (acting as heat sinks). Easy to operate, good build quality. The packaging could have been a bit firmer perhaps, not sure it would have survived too rough handling. But it arrived in perfect condition so no worries there.
